Alarm Security Grades Explained

Intruder alarm systems in the UK have to conform to European Standards BS EN 50131 series.

EN 50131 defines four grades of Intruder alarm system, 4 being the highest. The grade is measured by how resilient the alarm system is to attacks by intruders and other outside influences.

All components of the system are graded, including the control panel, motion detectors (PIRs) and signalling equipment.

Whilst most installers will design a system using components of the same grade, it may sometimes be appropriate to mix grades of components. However, the overall system will be graded of that of the lowest graded component.

Residential installations will typically require a Grade 1 or 2 with larger homes falling into Grade 3. Most commercial premises will require a Grade 2 or 3 alarm system.

The majority of insurance companies require a Grade 3 system where the system is a requirement of insurance cover.

Grade 1 - Lowest

Intruders are expected to have little knowledge of the alarm system and may be restricted to a limited range of tools.

Grade 2

Intruders are expected to have a little more knowledge of the alarm system and use a general range of tools and some specialist equipment.

Grade 3

Intruders are expected to be conversant with the alarm system and have a comprehensive range of tools and portable electronic equipment.

Grade 4 - Highest

When security takes precedence over all other factors. Intruders are expected to have the resources to plan an intrusion in detail and have a full range of equipment, including the means to substitute vital components in the alarm system.

Wireless Alarms

Wireless alarms have come a long way over the years and are now as reliable as a wired alarm and with the same detectors and sensors available really do make a viable alternative to the hassle of a hard-wired system with all that entails.

There are lots of benefits to a wireless system here’s just a few of them:

  • Easy to install and uninstall - Installing and moving a wireless home security system is a DIY job. Moving? You won’t have any problems taking your security devices with you.
  • Renter-friendly - Since you don’t need to open up the walls, wireless alarm systems are a strong choice for renters. There’s usually no need to damage or significantly alter the property.
  • Flexibility and scalability - Want to add another camera, more motion detectors or a few door and window sensors? No problem. Wireless systems make it easy to add devices.
  • Easy upgrades - Wireless systems are more future-proof than their hardwired counterparts. If the system or its components become broken or outdated, you can swap in new ones without too much trouble.
  • Smart home integration - Wireless security systems and smart home hubs are becoming more and more compatible. It’s a major convenience to be able to arm and disarm the alarm and operate all of your smart home devices in a centralized manner. Just keep in mind that some brands and manufacturers play better together than others, so you may need to investigate before making a purchase.
  • Affordability - It’s possible to get up and running with a good wireless alarm system for not a lot of money. The systems are much less expensive than their hardwired counterparts, especially since there’s no need to pay for installation.
  • Wi-Fi and cellular communications options - Security systems that depend on a landline stop working if the lines go down or get cut. Wireless systems don’t have this vulnerability because they use Wi-Fi, cellular networks and/or wireless mesh networks to interconnect each device and to reach emergency services. Alarm systems that use a cellular network (either as the primary means of communication or as a backup) can communicate through storms, power outages and downed lines, as long as there is sufficient cellular coverage in the area.
  • Battery power - Wireless alarm systems often use batteries as their main source of power or as a backup. As a result, you can stay up and running even through a power outage.
  • Remote control - Wireless systems are easier to operate from outside the house. Depending on the system, you can arm and disarm either from a smartphone app or using a key fob/transponder.

Monitored Alarm Systems

Monitored alarm systems and contracts If you want more peace of mind that a problem at your home will be dealt with quickly, you could consider a burglar alarm with a monitoring contract. This is becoming more popular with people not wanting the hassle of self-monitoring it’s an alternative that more people are taking up every year.

We offer monitoring contracts for wired or wireless alarms.

There are two types of monitoring contract: keyholder and police response. In either case, you pay a monthly or annual fee, and then the monitoring company will alert a nominated keyholder or the police when the alarm goes off. The alarm system connects to a receiving centre, which is notified each time your alarm is triggered. First, the receiving centre will call your home's landline to ask for password identification. If this is incorrect or no one answers, it will take action. This is either to inform the keyholder(s), or to call the police, depending on what type of contract you have.
